MySQL Cluster is now being adopted not only as a database for traditional telecom applications like, HLR (Home Locator Registry) or SLR (Subscriber Locator Registry), it is now also being widely deployed for VOIP, internet billing, session management, eCommerce sites, search engines and even traditional back office applications. In this paper we will explore the new features which have been introduced in MySQL Cluster 5.1.

It is no secret that "data" has become the most important, and valuable component of almost every modern application. In this paper of the high availability white paper series, we introduce high availability and the concepts around the subject and explore the consideration when selecting a high availability database solution.

One thing I learned fairly early in my DBA career was that if I was ever going to excel in managing the databases under my care, I needed to do one thing: smartly automate as much of my job as I could. To keep our heads above water, we needed to do something to ensure we always had our finger on the pulse of all our servers, plus we needed to make sure that any performance issue was recognized as early as possible.
Eventually every database system hit its limits. Because database systems have random disk access, it's not the throughput of your IO system that's relevant but the IO per second (random seek). You can scale this in a very limited way by adding more disks to your IO system, but here too you eventually hit a limit (price).

At the MySQL Mini Conference in Sydney this week we discussed how to use EXPLAIN EXTENDED to view the rewrites undertaken by the MySQL optimizer. IN particular, to see if MySQL performs a merge of the query into the view definition, or if it creates a temporary table.

Last week I needed to write an update SQL script that would insert some records into a database. However as the script was to be incorporated into a software update that was going to be deployed to all our customers, it needed to check some condition first and see, whether the insert was required at all.
