New Release of MySQL (5.0.11 Beta) is Now Available

This Beta release in a pre-production release in the 5.0 series. This release includes support for Stored Procedures, Views, Triggers, Information Schema (Data Dictionary), XA and more. Additional updates include:

  • Security improvement: Applied a patch that addresses a potential zlib data vulnerability that could result in an application crash. This only affects the binaries for platforms that are linked statically against the bundled zlib (most notably Microsoft Windows and HP-UX)
  • Mysqldump now dumps triggers for each dumped table. This can be suppressed with the skip-triggers option.
  • Added an optimization that avoids key access with NULL keys for the ref method when used in outer joins.
  • Numerous bug fixes

All efforts are now being focused on fixing bugs and stabilizing MySQL 5.0 for the upcoming production release. Get a head start on your projects by testing MySQL 5.0 beta now.

New Release of MySQL Connector/ODBC v5 Alpha is Now Availablee

MySQL is pleased to announce our first Alpha release of the new Connector/ODBC v5. Connector/ODBC v5 is available now for Windows XP (x86-32bit) and Linux (x86-32bit) with other platforms to follow. This release includes:

  • Alloc handles
  • Submit statements to the server
  • Process results using SQLFetch and SQLGetData
  • Free handles

New Release of MySQL Migration Toolkit (1.0.13rc) is Now Available

The Toolkit has support for "Generic migration" from any Database that has a JDBC Driver and "Optimized migration" from MS Access, Microsoft SQL Server and Oracle. This release includes:

  • More options to influence column migration
  • Advanced option to skip the version check for generic jdbc sources
  • Bug that caused an incorrect display when switching between the Detailed Object Mapping page and the Manual Editing page

Version 7.5.00.30 includes:

  • New queryrewrite
  • New parameter OPTIMIZE_FIRST_ROWS to switch optimization of statements with

  • Numerous bug fixes

Version 7.6.00.12 includes:

  • Production version of the Installation Manager
  • select-fetch-optimization will be available even for simple (one-table without DISTINCT, set-function,..) resultsets in Oracle-mode. Now it is necessary to specify that a resultset should be updateable even for simple Oracle-resultsets (in contrast to Oracle7 definition)
  • New systemview RESTARTINFORMATION
  • Better performance on selects with ROWNUM predicate

Managing Hierarchical Data in MySQL

Most users at one time or another have dealt with hierarchical data in a SQL database and no doubt learned that the management of hierarchical data is not what a relational database is intended for. The tables of a relational database are not hierarchical (like XML), but are simply a flat list. Hierarchical data has a parent-child relationship that is not naturally represented in a relational database table.
