New Release of MySQL Workbench 5.0.16 (Release Candidate)

MySQL Workbench is a next-generation visual database design application that can be used to efficiently design, manage and document database schemata. Further improvements have been made, including improved loading times for Models with large diagrams, colors of figures used on different diagrams can be synced now, the "pick columns" option of Relationship-tools is a separate tool now (used to create connections using already existing columns), we added a all new GRT Scripting IDE to create/modify/manage plugin scripts.

New Release of MySQL Connector/J 5.1.6 (GA)

MySQL Connector/J 5.1.6, a maintenance release of the production 5.1 branch has been released. Connector/J is the Type-IV pure-Java JDBC driver for MySQL. Version 5.1.6 is suitable for use with any MySQL version including MySQL-4.1, MySQL-5.0, MySQL-5.1 RC or the MySQL-6.0 development release. Changes include:

JDBC-4.0-ized XAConnections and datasources.
Fixed BUG#31790 - MysqlValidConnectionChecker doesn't properly handle ReplicationConnection
Fixed Bug#20491 - DatabaseMetadata.getColumns() doesn't return correct column names if connection character set isn't UTF-8. (There was a server-side component of this that was fixed late in the 5.0 development cycle, it seems, this is the last piece that fixes some loose ends in the JDBC driver). This fix touches *all* metadata information coming from the MySQL server itself.

New Release of MySQL Connnector/ODBC 5.1.3 (Release Candidate)

MySQL Connector/ODBC 5.1.3-rc, a new version of the ODBC driver for the MySQL database management system, has been released. This release is the first release candidate of the 5.1 series and is suitable for use with any MySQL server version since MySQL 4.1, including MySQL 5.0, 5.1, and 6.0. (It will not work with 4.0 or earlier releases.) Changes include:

Added SSLVERIFY connection option to verify server certificate. By default certificate is not verified now. (Bug #34648)
Database list height is autoadjusted in Windows GUI. (Bug #33918)
Recordset-based update fails if blob field is queried. (Bug #19065)
Descriptor records were not cleared correctly when calling SQLFreeStmt(SQL_UNBIND). (Bug #34271)

Note that I'm primarily a developer, with an interest in systems administration but I think that every developer should be able to understand and set up a MySQL cluster, at least to make the dev environment more robust.

After following the scale up path (i.e. buy bigger boxes) for a while now, we definitely need to scale out as things start to become "unhandy" and simply HUGE. We are running an OLTP application with about 200 million transaction per month. Currently we have some very large tables with more than 1,5 billion rows and the total database size is about 600 GB - all InnoDB.
