The MySQL native driver for PHP is an additional, alternative way to connect from PHP 5 and PHP 6 to the MySQL Server 4.1 or newer. It is a replacement for libmysql, the MySQL Client Library. From now on you can use ext/mysqli either together with libmysql as you did in the past or with mysqlnd. The following additions have been implemented since the release of 5.0.0-alpha:

When it comes to overall performance, it's important to remember that the #1 contributor is always a good database design. The second highest contributor to performance is well-tuned SQL code.
Let's take a look at this new diagnostic utility developed by Jeremy Cole of Proven Scaling and see how it can help you create high-performing SQL code as well as assist in troubleshooting existing queries that aren't providing the response times you'd like. The new profiler became available in the 5.0.37 version of the MySQL Community Server.

In August 2006 I made a post about the MySQL blackhole engine and its possible use for replication scenarios. Back then the primary focus was to reduce the amount of data being transferred between master and possible many slaves during normal business. This speeds up processing on the slaves, because they have considerably less data to first store to their relay logs and then immediately discard again.

In my replication environment I had a hardware failure on master host. A 4.5 GB table containing blob images was corrupted, so I issued a REPAIR TABLE and the effect was to repair the table but also to reduce the number of rows. So, the problem now is how to recover only those rows from a slave and re-populate the master table avoiding to dump the entire table.
