New Product Releases

New Release of MySQL Enterprise Server 5.0.30 (GA)

This is a Service Pack release of the MySQL Enterprise Server 5.0. The following is a partial list of bugs fixed:

  • Bug Fix: InnoDB showed substandard performance with multiple queries running concurrently.
  • Bug Fix: InnoDB exhibited thread thrashing with more than 50 concurrent connections under an update-intensive workload
  • Bug Fix: Some queries that used MAX() and GROUP BY could incorrectly return an empty result

New Release of MySQL 5.1.14 (Beta)

We are proud to present to you the MySQL Server 5.1.14 Beta Release. Changes include:

  • Direct and indirect usage of stored routines, user-defined unctions, and table references is now prohibited in CREATE EVENT and ALTER EVENT statements
  • Incompatible change: Previously, you could create a user-defined function (UDF) or stored function with the same name as a built-in function, but could not invoke the UDF. Now an error occurs if you try to create such a UDF.
  • NDB Cluster (Disk Data): It was possible to execute a statement for creating a Disk Data table that referred to a nonexistent tablespace, in which case the table was an in-memory NDB table. Such a statement instead now fails with an appropriate error message.

New Release of MySQL Connector/ODBC 5.00.10 (Beta)

MySQL Connector/ODBC is our next generation ODBC driver which allows access to the MySQL 5.x server using the widely used ODBC standard. The following is a partial list of fixed bugs and enhancements:

  • String query parameters are new escaped correctly. (fix bug#19078)
  • Added wide-string type info for SQLGetTypeInfo().
  • Added loose handling of retrieving some diagnostic data.

Article: Guaranteeing Data Integrity with MySQL 5.0

A new poll we're running on the MySQL web site shows that a lot of folks still aren't familiar with the strict mode/sql mode setting that was introduced with MySQL 5.0. The sql_mode parameter allows you to have MySQL better enforce data integrity in terms of what data is accepted/rejected by the server. Not having this capability produced a number of gotchas in previous MySQL versions, but in 5.0, these all go away.

PlanetMySQL Blog: MySQL Cluster and the Death of Secondary Indexes

I've often created secondary indexes with MyISAM which aren't used in day-to-day operation but that are needed for debugging or exploration of the database. Since NDB is an all memory database no disk seeks are involved which means the entire query can happen in memory. If you have engine_condition_pushdown enabled this is even faster because you can use the CPU on all your data nodes in parallel to find the result. This has two main wins for NDB.

PlanetMySQL Blog: Using LoadAvg for Performance Optimization

First thing to understand about LoadAvg it does not really tell you if it is CPU bound load or IO bound load. For example if you have LoadAvg of 10 it may mean there are 10 processes/threads actively consuming CPU or it could be same 10 processes waiting on disk IO and you can see CPU utilization being close to zero.
