MySQL Connector/ODBC 5.0 is meant to be used with MySQL-5.0 and newer, as it relies on information available in INFORMATION_SCHEMA when fulfilling requests for metadata. You no longer need to have Connector/ODBC 3.51 installed (however this release can co-exist with a 3.51 installation), as this version now uses its own setup library unlike prior ALPHA releases.

The MySQL ext/mysqli Converter Tool is a collection of PHP scripts that help you upgrade PHP applications using the old PHP mysql extensions to using the newer PHP mysqli extension. The old ext/mysql extension does not support the full functionality of MySQL versions greater than 4.1, such as Store Procedures, Triggers, Views, and much more. In order to use all the functions in the latest MySQL server release (currently 5.0.26), you should be using the mysqli extension that is available as of PHP 5.

This common complaint uttered fairly frequently on the forums appears to stem from some basic misunderstandings of the MySQL account structure. The most common culprit is the "anonymous guest" account set up by default, coupled with an initial lack of knowledge of how to connect to MySQL.

Even though you can tune many variables in MySQL Server, there are a few that are really important for the most common workloads.

This is the fourth in a series of articles on profiling MySQL. My past three articles have explained how to measure the work a query causes MySQL to do. In this article I introduce a tool I've written to do the work for you and produce a compact, readable report of that work, with all the math already done, and the measurements labelled and grouped for ease of comprehension. With this tool you can understand query performance at a glance.

This is interesting question which I thought would be good to write about. There are obviously benefits and drawbacks for each method.

Scaling out (or Horizontal Scaling) means distributing the computing and data workload among multiple commodity servers by load balancing, with the ability to add or subtract servers to increase or decrease capacity. By distributing the workload, processing resources are spread among multiple low-cost servers, which improves both performance and the availability of the overall service at a dramatically lower cost.
