MySQL 5.0 Beta Challenge

To assist the MySQL 5.0 QA process, we are looking for as many users as possible to test 5.0 in general, and specifically key features such as stored procedures, views, triggers.

There will be cool MySQL goodies (T-shirts, mugs, books) for users who are the most helpful either directly with 5.0 testing, or indirectly by informing other users about 5.0. For instance:

  • The best or most (5.0 feature related) bug reports at bugs.mysql.com
  • The most helpful people on related MySQL forums at forums.mysql.com
  • The best MySQL 5.0 related articles (magazine or online) or dedicated web site.
  • The most informational/inspiring blog entries on MySQL 5.0 topics.

MySQL Launches Worldwide Tour of MySQL 5.0 Training Workshops

At the end of May MySQL announced a series of two-day training workshops designed to introduce developers and DBAs to the new enterprise features and capabilities of the company's forthcoming MySQL 5.0 product. New Release of MySQL (5.0.7 Beta) is Now Available

This is the fourth Beta release in the 5.0 series. This release includes support for Stored Procedures, Views, Triggers, Information Schema (Data Dictionary), XA and more. Additional updates include:

  • Improved the optimizer to be able to use indexes for expressions of the form indexed_col NOT IN (val1, val2, ...) and indexed_col NOT BETWEEN val1 AND val2.. (Bug #10561 http://bugs.mysql.com/10561) Added --with-big-tables compilation option to configure
  • Fixed a server crash resulting from accessing InnoDB tables within stored functions. This is handled by prohibiting statements that do an explicit or explicit commit or rollback within stored functions or triggers. (Bug #10015 http://bugs.mysql.com/10015)
  • On Windows, with lower_case_table_names set to 2, using ALTER TABLE to alter a MEMORY or InnoDB table that had a mixed-case name also improperly changed the name to lowercase. (Bug #9660 http://bugs.mysql.com/9660)

All efforts are now being focused on fixing bugs and stabilizing MySQL 5.0 for the upcoming production release. Get a head start on your projects by testing MySQL 5.0 beta now.

New Release of MySQL Migration Toolkit (1.0.7) is Now Available

This release adds support for Microsoft SQL Server and addresses a number of bugs. All users are recommended to update to this new release.

The list of new features includes
  • Support for MS SQL Server 2000
  • Renaming of target schema objects
The list of addressed bugs includes
  • Incomplete data transfer from some tables
  • Access BYTE and BIT not mapped to unsigned datatype
  • Datetime columns were missing time
  • Some Oracle/MS Access datatypes were not mapped

New Release of MaxDB (7.6.00.10) is Now Available

This is a production release that contains new features and bug fixes. This release includes:

  • User/user-group feature extended by schemas
  • Automatic handling of database full situations

Most users concentrate on MySQL's databases and tables -- after all, that's where most of the action takes place -- and they don't usually look deeper to understand how it handles access privileges, passwords, and security.
