Most users concentrate on MySQL's databases and tables -- after all, that's where most of the action takes place -- and they don't usually look deeper to understand how it handles access privileges, passwords, and security. With that in mind, this chapter examines the MySQL access control system and throws some light on the MySQL grant tables. These tables, which are an integral part of the server's security system, offer database administrators a great deal of power and flexibility in deciding the rules that govern access to the system.

The process of making databases available to users via a browser has thus far been complex, time consuming, and therefore expensive. These projects have typically taken a lot of time because of the lengthy learning curve and the time-intensive nature of coding. In this paper Alpha Software will be exploring a new Rapid Application Development process that uses a powerful, yet extremely easy to use new IDE/RAD tool based on the award winning Alpha Five product. The name of the tool is Data-2-the-Web for MySQL. It builds sophisticated web/browser based applications on top of MySQL Network databases in a fraction of the time required when using traditional programming languages such as PHP, Perl, or Python.
MyDB studio™ for MySQL is a graphical GUI providing developers and DBAs a complete environment to simplify the administration of MySQL servers including backup, tuning, creation and execution of SQL queries.
