New Release of MySQL (5.0.4 Beta) is Now Available

This is the second Beta release in the 5.0 series. This release includes support for Stored Procedures, Views, Triggers, Information Schema (Data Dictionary), and more. Additional updates include:

  • Added -show-table-type option to mysqlshow, to display a column indicating the table type, as SHOW FULL TABLES.
  • Added -with-big-tables compilation option to configure
  • New configuration directives !include and !includedir implemented for including option files and searching directories for option files

All efforts are now being focused on fixing bugs and stabilizing MySQL 5.0 for the upcoming production release. Get a head start on your projects by testing MySQL 5.0 beta now.

New Release of MySQL Query Browser (1.1.7) is Now Available

MySQL Query Browser is a GUI query shell, allowing execution of SQL queries from a Web browser-like, easy to use interface. Changes in this version include:

  • Includes View support with MySQL 5.0.3 and newer versions
  • Display of MySQL Query Warnings and notes

New Release of MySQL Community Edition (4.1.12) is Now Available

This is a maintenance release of the 4.1 version, mainly fixing recently discovered bugs. This release includes:

  • Updated version of libedit to 2.9
  • InnoDB: When the maximum length of SHOW INNODB STATUS output would be exceeded, truncate the beginning of the list of active transactions, instead of truncating the end of the output.
  • InnoDB: When FOREIGN_KEY_CHECKS=0, ALTER TABLE and RENAME TABLE will ignore any type incompatibilities between referencing and referenced columns. Thus, it will be possible to convert the character sets of columns that participate in a foreign key. Be sure to convert all tables before modifying any data!

New Release of MySQL Migration Toolkit (1.0.6) is Now Available

The MySQL Migration Toolkit is a powerful framework that enables you to quickly migrate your proprietary databases to MySQL. It includes built in support for migrating Oracle, Access as well as any database via JDBC. The MySQL Migration Toolkit supports migrations to MySQL 4.x and MySQL 5.0. This is mainly a bugfix release that includes:

  • Added support of missing mapping for MS Access DOUBLE and BYTE datatypes
  • Safe handling of MS Access COUNTER (AutoNum) datatype and conversion to the MySQL auto increment flag

New Release of MaxDB (7.6.00.09) is Now Available

This is a beta release that contains new features and bug fixes. This release includes:

  • DB procedures now support parameters of the LONG data type
  • The SQLDBC trace can now be activated by calling SQLDBC API methods
  • Forward-only cursor and SELECT/FETCH optimization have been set as default

Point-in-Time Data Recovery

A utility like mysqldump is very useful for backing up MySQL data and table schema. However, backups are usually made only once a day or at some other regular interval. If data is lost on your system several hours after the last backup is completed, you may not be able to recover it. There are a few methods by which you can continuously protect data, some of which are explored in this article.
