The MySQL Users Conference 2005 will be the largest gathering of MySQL developers and users. Individuals and companies interested in making presentations or giving tutorials are invited to submit proposals. The theme this year is "MySQL Everywhere." Proposals should be focused on helping attendees:
T-Systems Integration used MySQL to develop a web front end and a back-end order processing application for Westfalia Wekzeugco. GmbH, a leading online retailer of tools, electronics, household items, and more. In addition, T-Systems migrated the database behind their existing Customer Management System from Oracle to MySQL. The website www.westfalia.de relies on 11 MySQL Servers, deployed on 4 machines to serve about 400,000 visitors each month.

The Information Technologies department of Pottawattamie County, Iowa is employing the open source LAMP software stack — Linux, Apache, MySQL, Perl/PHP — to improve the reliability and functionality of their local government applications. They have standardized on MySQL for all their new database systems development, replacing legacy Informix and Microsoft SQL Server applications.

Munich, Germany. The three most famous European authors of open-source software have issued an appeal against software patents on NoSoftwarePatents.com. Linus Torvalds (Linux), Michael "Monty" Widenius (MySQL) and Rasmus Lerdorf (PHP) urge the EU Council, which will convene later in the week, not to adopt a draft directive on software patents that they consider "deceptive, dangerous, and democratically illegitimate". They also call on the Internet community to express solidarity by placing NoSoftwarePatents.com links and banners on many Web sites.
