For current versions of Mac OS X Server, no operating system changes are necessary before compiling MySQL. Compiling for the Server platform is the same as for the client version of Mac OS X.
For older versions (Mac OS X Server 1.2, a.k.a. Rhapsody), you must first install a pthread package before trying to configure MySQL.

That link above is broken, but..
http://www.mysql.com/doc/en/Mac_OS_X_installation.html
..says:
"Due to a bug in the Mac OS X package installer, you may sometimes see the error message You cannot install this software on this disk. (null) in the destination disk selection dialogue. If this error occurs, simply click the Go Back button once to return to the previous screen. Now click Continue to advance to the destination disk selection again - you should now be able to choose the destination disk correctly. We have reported this bug to Apple and they are investigating this problem."
